My name is Emily and I go to Church in the Gardens in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. On Sunday, November 17, 1996 five people from our youth group took about 1 1/2 hours to visit a nursing home in West Palm Beach. When we got there, we were told the activity room was not available. Pastor Jon, our youth leader, asked if we could walk around and make room visits. We were given permission and off we went.
We went around to many rooms and were always welcomed. We sang a variety of songs from "Jesus Loves Me" to the Oscar Meyer Weiner Song. As we went around the fourth corridor, we came to an elderly man who had been a blues dancer. He said he was too old to dance, but he sang us a song from Red Hot Chili Peppers. Another man was pretty funny. he loved to make animal noises while we sang.
Moreover, there is one resident's room I will never forget. We walked in and introduced ourselves and sang a few songs. Afterwards we talked about God, and that is when they introduced themselves. They told us to call them Stormin' Norman and Hicken Chicken. Consequently, we had to leave, but as we left the room both men told us we had made their day. I truely think that visit brought joy to all of us.
I really think we had an impact on almost everyone we met, and I would like to go back. In conclusion, I say the next time you go by someone who is old or just feeling bad, don't be afraid to smile or say hello."
