Church Bulletin Insert For National Grandparents Day

"A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed." - Proverbs 11:25

The Sunday following Labor Day, Sept. 7, 2014, has been designated National Grandparents Day. This Holiday originated with the desire of Marian McQuade, a housewife from West Virgina, to champion the cause of lonely elderly in nursing homes.

Of the 2 million Americans in nursing homes, statistics show that 60% of the residents never have a visitor. Never!

The special people in these facilities come from all sorts of spiritual backgrounds from being unchurched to having played active parts in their local church. Many suffer daily from loneliness and hopelessness. They desperately need some "Faithful Friends" to come alongside them with encouragement and spiritual care.

Visiting a person in a nursing home requires no special skills or talents. All that is needed is a desire to reach out in Christian love to a "Forgotten Generation". Anyone who can read a Bible Verse, sing a Hymn, hold a hand, or be a "Hugger for Jesus" is qualified.

Many of us have friends or relatives who are confined in a health care facility. Wouldn't National Grandparents Day be a great time to start a tradition of regular caring visits to these needy people?

They are just sitting there waiting for you!
